Shimba Hills day safari from Diani

Shimba Hills National Park lies inland from Kenya’s south coast, a cool, green change from the beach. It is one of the few places in Kenya where you can look for sable antelope, and it also has elephants, buffalo, giraffe and a wide range of forest birds. Because the park is close to Diani, it is one of the easiest full-day safaris from the south coast.

How the day works

Your driver-guide collects you from your Diani hotel in the morning and drives inland to the park gate. The morning is spent on a game drive through the grassland and forest edges, followed by a picnic or lodge lunch. In the afternoon there is a guided walk to Sheldrick Falls, then the drive back to the coast. Exact timing depends on your pickup time and the conditions in the park.

What you may see

Sable antelope are the highlight for many visitors, together with elephants, buffalo, giraffe, bushbuck and colourful forest birds. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the forest can be quieter than the open plains parks.

No. Wildlife is wild and sightings vary with season, weather and luck. Your driver-guide knows where to look and plans game drives around the best light.

How much walking is there?

The walk to Sheldrick Falls is on forest paths and includes some slopes and steps. It suits most reasonably fit visitors; tell us if anyone has difficulty walking and we adjust the plan.
