This day trip pairs beach time with a very different coastal experience: a guided walk through the Kaya Kinondo Sacred Kaya Forest, one of the Mijikenda community’s sacred forest sites.

Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest

Kaya forests are patches of coastal forest that Mijikenda communities have protected for centuries as sacred sites, and several, including Kaya Kinondo, form part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing recognising their cultural and ecological value. A community guide leads visitors along a marked path, explaining traditional beliefs, forest plants and the role the site still plays in local life. Modest dress and quiet, respectful behaviour are expected throughout the visit.

Diani Beach

After the forest walk, the day continues at Diani Beach itself, with time to swim, walk along the shore or simply relax. The beach is wide and shallow in many places, especially at low tide, and is lined with hotels, beach bars and water-sports operators. Optional activities such as snorkelling trips, kite-surfing lessons or a glass-bottom boat ride can be arranged locally for an extra cost.

How the day works

Pickup is from Mombasa, Diani or nearby south-coast hotels in the morning. The Kaya Kinondo visit typically takes around an hour with the guide, after which the rest of the day is spent at the beach at a relaxed pace, with a return to your hotel in the late afternoon.

Best time to go

Diani can be visited year-round; the calmest seas and clearest water are usually from October to March, while the long rains between April and June are quieter and greener.
