Dolphins and the boat trip

Early in the morning, a traditional dhow or motorised boat leaves Shimoni to search for dolphins. Bottlenose and other dolphin species are commonly seen, and the trip can be exciting when pods come alongside. Dolphins are wild animals and appear when they choose, so sightings and swimming with them are never guaranteed. Responsible guides keep a respectful distance and follow marine park rules.

Snorkelling at Kisite

The boat then anchors at the reef around the small Kisite islands, where you can snorkel among coral formations and colourful tropical fish. Equipment is provided and guides help beginners, but you should be comfortable in the water. Tides and weather affect visibility, and the operators may change the plan for safety.

Lunch and Wasini Island

After snorkelling, the boat lands at Wasini Island for a coastal seafood lunch, with chicken or vegetarian options usually available on request. A guided walk through the village and along the coral-stone paths introduces Swahili culture, and some tours include the mangrove boardwalk. Visits to the Shimoni caves, linked to the region’s history, can be added for an extra fee.

How the day works

Pickups from Mombasa and south-coast hotels are early, often between 5:30 and 6:30 am, because the drive to Shimoni takes around two hours or more depending on traffic, the ferry crossing and your hotel location. You return to your hotel in the late afternoon.

Best time to go

Seas are usually calmer from October to March. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, a towel and a change of clothes.
