Overview

Chale Island and Diani–Chale Marine Reserve snorkelling from Ukunda

Just off the coast south of Diani Beach, the Diani–Chale Marine National Reserve protects reef, seagrass and mangrove habitat, and Chale Island sits within its waters. This half-day trip from Ukunda takes you out by boat for guided snorkelling, and it fits easily into a beach holiday because it is short and leaves the rest of the day free.

How the trip works

You are collected from your hotel and driven to the departure point, where the boat leaves according to the tide. Trips are scheduled around the tide because water depth and visibility change through the day, so we confirm the departure time for your date when you book. A guide goes with you in the water and points out what to look for.

What you may see

Coral, reef fish in many colours and sea stars, and, with luck, turtles or dolphins on the boat. Visibility, currents and wildlife vary with the season, weather and tide, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Good to know

You should be comfortable in the water, and snorkelling gear is provided. Wear a rash vest or T-shirt and use reef-safe sun cream, and please do not touch or stand on the coral. Tell us if you have any health conditions, and we confirm the details, the reserve fees and the departure point in your written quote. If you prefer to stay on the beach, we can suggest other options.

Frequently asked questions

I am not a strong swimmer. Can I join?

Tell us when you book. Life jackets can be worn while snorkelling, and the guide stays close, but you should be comfortable in the water.

Is the water always clear?

No. Visibility changes with the tide, wind and season, which is why we time the trip with the tide and tell you what to expect for your date.

Can you collect us from our hotel or villa?

Yes. Tell us where you are staying in Ukunda, Diani, Galu Kinondo or Tiwi and we confirm the pickup time when you book.

Are entry fees included?

Entry fees, boat costs and meals are itemised in your written quote, because they change over time and depend on the size of your group.
