A dhow is the traditional sailing boat of the East African coast. This is the most premium experience on our Ukunda list: a private dhow for your group, a slow sail along the Diani coast as the sun goes down, and a dinner arranged for you on the beach afterwards. It suits couples celebrating something, families and small groups who want an evening they will remember.
You are collected from where you are staying and taken to the beach where the dhow is waiting. The crew sails the boat while you relax with welcome drinks, and the route and timing depend on the wind and tide, so we confirm the plan when you book. Departure time changes with the season so that you are on the water for the sunset.
After the sail, a table is set for you on the beach. The menu, usually local seafood and other coastal dishes, is agreed in advance, and we note dietary needs when you book. Extra drinks and any special arrangements, such as flowers for an anniversary, can be added and are itemised in your quote.
The dhow is for your group only, so you set the pace and the mood. Many guests choose it for honeymoons, anniversaries and birthdays, and we can quote for larger groups on request.
Bring a light jacket for the evening breeze, wear flat shoes you can step onto the beach in, and keep valuables in your hotel. Children wear life jackets on board. If the weather is poor, the evening can be moved to another date.
Meet your driver at your hotel, villa or apartment in Ukunda or Diani and drive to the departure beach.
