Samburu safari: northern Kenya’s wild river country

Samburu National Reserve lies in Kenya’s dry north, where the Ewaso Ng’iro River creates a green ribbon through hot, rocky semi-desert. Wildlife gathers along the water, and the landscape of red earth, doum palms and distant hills feels very different from the southern parks. This three-day Samburu safari from Nairobi suits travellers who have already seen the Mara or Amboseli and want something less crowded.

The Samburu Special Five

The reserve is famous for five species that are more typical of northern Kenya: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx and gerenuk, a long-necked antelope that stands on its hind legs to browse. Elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, crocodile and many bird species are also found, and leopards are often seen in riverside trees. As always, sightings depend on luck, season and the animals themselves.

Buffalo Springs and Shaba

Buffalo Springs National Reserve lies just across the river and offers a similar mix of wildlife with natural springs, and Shaba National Reserve nearby is associated with the story of Elsa the lioness. Depending on time and road conditions, game drives can include areas across the reserve system.

Samburu culture

The region is the homeland of the Samburu people, related to the Maasai, and a respectful village visit or cultural demonstration can be arranged for an extra fee. Your guide will explain how conservancies and local communities work together.

Best time to visit

Dry months from June to October and January to March concentrate animals near the river. The region is hot in the day and cooler at night, so pack light clothing, a hat and sunscreen.

Good to know

The drive from Nairobi takes around five to six hours, usually via Nanyuki and Isiolo, with a lunch stop. The price is a guide per adult sharing and is confirmed in writing before payment, depending on the lodge, season and group size.
