The Mara in three days, without the long drive

The Maasai Mara is roughly a five-to-six-hour drive from Nairobi each way, which uses up a large share of a short trip. This itinerary replaces both drives with a scheduled light-aircraft flight from Nairobi's Wilson Airport, so you reach the reserve in about an hour and spend nearly all of your three days actually watching wildlife.

How the three days work

Day one starts with a transfer to Wilson Airport and the flight to one of the Mara's airstrips, chosen to suit your lodge. You are met on the ground, taken to the lodge for lunch, and head out on an afternoon game drive. Day two is a full day in the reserve, with morning and afternoon drives either side of a relaxed lunch back at camp. Day three includes a final game drive where the flight schedule allows, before the flight back to Nairobi.

Getting there by air

Flights are scheduled light-aircraft services, and light aircraft have strict baggage allowances — commonly around 15 kg per person in a soft-sided bag, confirmed with your booking. Flights land at Wilson Airport rather than JKIA, and schedules can shift with weather, so we suggest an evening or later international departure, or a night in Nairobi, rather than a tight same-day connection.

    Day 1 – Fly Nairobi to the Maasai Mara

    Transfer to Wilson Airport for the flight to the Mara (about an hour), met at the airstrip and taken to your lodge for lunch, then an afternoon game drive.

    Day 2 – Full day in the reserve

    Morning and afternoon game drives across the Mara, with an optional sunrise hot-air balloon safari at extra cost.

    Day 3 – Final game drive and fly to Nairobi

    A game drive where the flight schedule allows, then the airstrip transfer and flight back to Wilson Airport, with onward transfer to your hotel or JKIA.
