Overland, the Maasai Mara is a very long journey from the Kenyan coast — roughly seven to eight hours by road to Nairobi (or a train ride on the SGR), then another five to six hours on to the reserve. Scheduled light-aircraft services now link the coast directly with the Mara, which turns it into a morning flight and makes a three-day Mara safari a realistic add-on to a beach holiday in Mombasa, Diani or Malindi.

How the three days work

Day one begins very early: you are collected from your coast hotel for a morning flight to the Mara, which takes around three hours in the air including any stops en route. You are met at the airstrip, taken to your lodge for lunch, and head out on an afternoon game drive. Day two is a full day in the reserve. Day three includes a final morning game drive where the schedule allows, then a midday flight back to the coast, arriving in the early afternoon.

Getting there by air

Some coast departures need a minimum number of passengers to operate, particularly from Malindi, so we confirm availability for your dates before quoting. Light aircraft have strict baggage allowances — commonly around 15 kg per person in a soft-sided bag, confirmed with your booking — so pack light and leave larger luggage at your coast hotel.
