Amboseli National Park sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, just across the Tanzanian border, and is one of the most photographed safari landscapes in Africa. Flat, open plains make wildlife easy to see, while underground water from the mountain feeds swamps that draw elephants, buffalo, hippo and waterbirds even in the dry season. This two-day Amboseli safari from Nairobi is designed for travellers who want a compact, scenic trip with strong wildlife photography.
Elephants and open horizons
Amboseli is best known for its elephants, which are among the most studied in Africa thanks to a long-running research project in the park. Herds often walk close to vehicles across open ground. Lion, cheetah, hyena, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe are also present, and more than 400 bird species have been recorded, including pelicans, herons and crowned cranes in the wetter areas.
Seeing Kilimanjaro
Africa’s highest mountain rises to 5,895 metres, but clouds frequently cover it by mid-morning. Views are usually best around sunrise and late afternoon, and cannot be guaranteed. Observation Hill is a popular viewpoint for wide panoramas of the plains and the swamp.
Your two days
You leave Nairobi in the morning and reach Amboseli after around four to five hours on the road, depending on traffic and the route. After lunch there is an afternoon game drive, then a night at a lodge or tented camp. The next morning includes a sunrise game drive before the return to Nairobi. The trip can be extended to three days or combined with Tsavo West.
Best time to visit
The dry months of June to October and January to February bring the best wildlife concentrations around water, though dust can be heavy. The rainy seasons are greener and quieter but cloudier.
