Overview

Nairobi National Museum and Karen Blixen half-day tour

Not every Nairobi day has to start with a game drive. This half-day tour introduces the city’s cultural and literary history through two of its best-known museums: the Nairobi National Museum and the Karen Blixen Museum, both easy additions before or after a longer safari, or during a stopover between flights.

Nairobi National Museum

The Nairobi National Museum holds Kenya’s leading collections of natural history, palaeontology, art and cultural artefacts, including exhibits on human origins drawn from decades of fossil research in East Africa, alongside galleries of contemporary Kenyan art and displays representing the country’s many communities. A stroll through the adjoining Nairobi Snake Park, where conditions allow, can be added for visitors interested in reptiles.

Karen Blixen Museum

A short drive away, in the Nairobi suburb that now bears her name, the Karen Blixen Museum preserves the farmhouse once owned by the Danish author who wrote "Out of Africa" under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Original furniture, farm equipment and period photographs give a sense of colonial-era Kenya, and the surrounding gardens and Ngong Hills views are part of the visit.

A relaxed pace

This tour suits travellers who want an indoor, unhurried alternative to a game drive, families with young children on a rest day, or anyone curious about Kenya’s literary and cultural history rather than only its wildlife.

How the half day works

Pickup is from your Nairobi hotel, with roughly ninety minutes at each museum and a short drive between the two. The order of the museums can be swapped to suit flight times or traffic.

Good to know

The price is a guide per adult and includes both entry fees. Lunch is not included, and the final price is confirmed before payment.
