Nairobi city and national park day tour

Nairobi is one of the few capital cities in the world with a national park inside its boundaries, and this day tour is built around that unusual overlap. In a single day you can see lion, giraffe and rhino against a backdrop of the city skyline, meet orphaned elephants being hand-raised for release back to the wild, feed reticulated giraffe at close range, and watch traditional dance from across the country, all without leaving Nairobi.

Nairobi National Park

The morning starts with a game drive in Nairobi National Park, a fenced sanctuary of open grassland and rocky gorges that is home to lion, giraffe, zebra, buffalo and one of Kenya’s most important black and white rhino populations. Because the park is compact, a two- to three-hour drive covers a fair amount of ground, though sightings are never guaranteed.

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Next is a stop at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, on the edge of the park, where orphaned elephant calves are hand-raised by keepers before eventual release into Tsavo. The trust normally opens to the public for a short visiting window each morning, when keepers bring the youngest elephants out to feed in view of visitors; hours are set by the trust and can change.

Giraffe Centre

At the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi’s Langata area, a raised wooden platform lets visitors feed, and often get close to, a small resident herd of endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, part of a project that also supports breeding and conservation education.

Bomas of Kenya

The day usually finishes at the Bomas of Kenya, a cultural centre where dance troupes perform traditional music and dance from several of Kenya’s ethnic groups inside a purpose-built auditorium, alongside a village of traditional homestead replicas.
