Tsavo East safari from Mombasa and the Kenya coast

Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s largest and most accessible national parks, which makes it the natural first safari for travellers already on the coast. Broad, flat plains stretch away in every direction, cut by the Galana River and dotted with baobab and acacia. This two-day Tsavo East safari leaves from Mombasa, Diani or Malindi and returns the next day, so you can add real wildlife to a beach holiday without committing to a long itinerary.

What Tsavo East is known for

The park is famous for its elephants, whose skin takes on the colour of the red soil after dust baths. Lion, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, gerenuk and a wide range of birds are also seen, and Mudanda Rock is a well-known viewpoint over a waterhole where animals gather in the dry season. Other highlights can include Lugard Falls on the Galana River and the Aruba Dam area. Tsavo is also remembered for the historic man-eating lions of the 1890s, a story your guide may share on the drive.

How the two days work

You are collected from your hotel in the early morning and drive inland, usually entering through a gate near Voi after roughly three to four hours on the road, depending on traffic and where you start. There is an afternoon game drive, a night at a lodge or tented camp, a morning game drive and a return to the coast in the afternoon. A longer three-day version can be arranged to add a second park.

Best time to go

Wildlife is easier to find during the dry months of June to October and January to February, when animals concentrate near water. The rains can make some tracks slow, though the park is greener and quieter.
