Maasai Mara safari: three days of classic Kenyan game viewing
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is the Kenya safari most travellers picture first: rolling savannah, scattered acacia and wildlife on a scale that is hard to find anywhere else. Our Maasai Mara Classic Safari is planned as a three-day, two-night road safari from Nairobi, which gives you two full game-viewing days without the cost of internal flights. Spot Kenya Tours and Safaris arranges the vehicle, driver-guide, reserve entry, meals and lodge or tented-camp accommodation so you can concentrate on the animals.
What you can expect to see
The Mara is home to lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, hippo and large herds of zebra, topi and giraffe. Between roughly July and October the reserve is known for the wildebeest migration and the Mara River crossings, although timing shifts with the rains and no operator can promise a crossing on a particular day. Outside those months resident wildlife is still excellent and the reserve is often quieter.
How the three days work
Day one is the drive from Nairobi through the Rift Valley to the reserve, with an afternoon game drive on arrival. Day two is a full day in the reserve: an early drive, a lunch break and a late-afternoon drive when the light is best for photography. Day three is a final morning drive before the return journey. The road between Narok and the reserve gate can be rough, so we use 4x4 safari vehicles with pop-up roofs.
Optional extras
A Maasai village visit and a sunrise hot-air balloon flight can be added on request. Both are priced separately and depend on availability. The itinerary can also be stretched to four or five days, or combined with Lake Nakuru or Amboseli.
Best time to visit
July to October suits the migration, January to March is dry and good for predator sightings, and the long rains of April and May bring lower rates and fewer vehicles but muddier tracks.

Frequently asked questions
Is the wildebeest migration guaranteed?
No. Herds usually reach the Mara between July and October, but timing and river crossings depend on the rains and cannot be guaranteed.
Can we fly instead of driving?
Yes. Scheduled flights from Wilson Airport can replace the road transfer; this changes the price and we quote it on request.
Is this safari suitable for children?
Children are welcome. The first and last days include long drives, so we recommend it for ages five and up.
What is not included in the price?
Flights, visas, insurance, drinks, tips, the balloon flight and the Maasai village visit are extra.
