Overview

Uganda safari: falls, chimpanzees and savannah

Uganda packs a remarkable range of habitats into a small country, from the Nile’s thunderous waterfalls to forest full of primates and open savannah. Our Uganda Safari Circuit is a six-day road trip from Entebbe covering three of the country’s best-loved parks, and it is a natural add-on to a Kenya itinerary or a stand-alone East Africa trip.

Murchison Falls National Park

The Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge at Murchison Falls before dropping into a pool below, creating one of Africa’s most powerful waterfalls. A boat trip from the bottom of the falls passes hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds, and game drives on the northern bank show elephant, giraffe, buffalo and lion. A hike to the top of the falls is a highlight for many visitors.

Kibale Forest and chimpanzees

Kibale National Park is known for having a very high number of primate species, and chimpanzee tracking is the main draw. Rangers lead small groups to habituated chimpanzee communities, and visitors spend a limited time with them. Sightings are likely but not guaranteed. The nearby Bigodi Wetland walk adds birds and other monkeys.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth combines savannah, crater lakes and the Kazinga Channel, where boat trips get close to hippos, buffalo and elephants coming to drink. In the Ishasha sector, lions are sometimes seen resting in fig trees, though sightings vary. Game drives look for elephant, buffalo, Uganda kob and, with luck, leopard.

Travel times

Distances between parks are long and roads vary in quality, so days include several hours of driving. The trip is planned with early starts and unhurried stops for lunch and viewpoints. Domestic flights can shorten some legs for an extra cost.

Add gorillas?

The circuit can be extended to include gorilla trekking in Bwindi, which raises the price and needs early permit booking. Ask us for a combined quote.

Best time to visit

June to September and December to February are drier and easier for roads and trekking. Rain can fall in any month.

The price is a guide per adult sharing a room and depends on lodge tier, season and permit availability. The final quote is confirmed in writing before payment. Uganda requires proof of yellow-fever vaccination for entry, and visa rules vary.

    Day 1 – Entebbe to Murchison Falls

    Early start, drive north with stops and an evening at the lodge.

    Day 2 – Nile boat cruise and game drive

    Game drive in the northern sector and a boat trip to the base of the falls.

    Day 3 – Falls and transfer to Kibale

    Walk to the top of the falls, then a long drive to Kibale Forest.

    Day 4 – Chimpanzee tracking

    Track chimpanzees in the forest and walk in the Bigodi Wetland.

    Drive to the park for a game drive and the Kazinga Channel boat trip.
