Tsavo East and Salt Lick: a two-day safari from Voi

This two-day safari combines Tsavo East’s open plains with Salt Lick, a wildlife sanctuary in the Taita Hills where animals gather at a waterhole beside the lodge. Both start from Voi, so you can join straight from the SGR, a bus or shuttle, or your own vehicle.

The route

Day one begins in Voi with a transfer to Voi Gate and a game drive in Tsavo East. In the afternoon you continue to Salt Lick for the evening and night at the waterhole. Day two starts with an early look at the waterhole and a morning game drive before the return to Voi, or onward to Mtito Andei or Emali if you are continuing by train or road.

    Day 1 – Voi to Tsavo East and Salt Lick

    Meet in Voi, enter Tsavo East by Voi Gate for a game drive, then continue to Salt Lick for the afternoon and evening at the waterhole.

    Day 2 – Morning drive and finish

    Early waterhole viewing and a morning game drive, then transfer back to Voi or on to Mtito Andei or Emali.

Can we start the safari straight from the SGR?

Yes. Tell us your train and arrival time and we meet you at Voi station and transfer you to the safari vehicle or park gate. Please check your service’s timetable and the stations it stops at when you book.

Where can the safari finish?

Back in Voi, at Mtito Andei or at Emali, so you can continue by SGR, bus or private transport to Nairobi or Mombasa. Tell us your onward travel time and we plan around it.

What is Salt Lick?

Salt Lick is a wildlife sanctuary in the Taita Hills between Tsavo East and Tsavo West, known for watching elephants and other animals at a waterhole beside the lodge.

Are animal sightings guaranteed?

No. Wildlife is wild and sightings vary with season, weather and luck. Your driver-guide knows where to look and plans game drives around the best light.
