Ol Pejeta Conservancy lies on the Laikipia Plateau near Nanyuki, with Mount Kenya rising to the south-east on clear days. It is a not-for-profit conservancy that combines wildlife tourism with rhino protection and community programmes, and it is one of the best places in Kenya to combine Big Five habitat with conservation stories. This two-day Ol Pejeta safari from Nairobi is designed for travellers who want a richer, more educational safari than a simple game drive.

Rhinos and conservation

The conservancy is known for its work protecting rhinos and is a leading black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. It also protects some of the last remaining northern white rhinos in the world, which are guarded around the clock; visits to them follow the conservancy’s rules and are arranged through Ol Pejeta itself. Wildlife you may see

Elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, Grevy’s zebra, giraffe and a wide variety of antelope live in the conservancy’s open grassland and acacia woodland. Because it is privately managed, some activities such as night drives and walking safaris may be offered with the conservancy, subject to rules and availability.

Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Ol Pejeta hosts a chimpanzee sanctuary run in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, where rescued chimpanzees live in protected enclosures. A visit adds a very different side to the safari and is a popular family option.

How your two days work

You drive north from Nairobi through the highlands, with a lunch stop near Nanyuki and the Equator crossing on the way. Depending on departure time, there is usually an afternoon game drive followed by a night at the conservancy. Day two starts with a sunrise drive, an optional chimpanzee sanctuary visit and the return to Nairobi.

Best time to visit

Dry months from June to October and January to February are best for wildlife. Nights and mornings are cool at altitude, so bring a warm layer.
