Malindi and Watamu tour: history, reefs and coast

Malindi is one of the oldest towns on the Kenyan coast, and the beaches and reefs around it are among the most rewarding on the north coast. This two-day Malindi Marine and Cultural Tour from Mombasa or the north coast combines heritage sites, marine parks and time on the beach with an overnight stay, so you avoid a rushed single day on the road.

History and old town

The town is linked to Vasco da Gama’s 1498 visit, and a Portuguese stone pillar overlooks the sea near the old town. You can visit the museum, the old mosque area and the seafront to understand how Swahili, Arab, Indian and Portuguese trade shaped the coast. Malindi also has a lively Italian influence, visible in its restaurants and cafés.

Gede Ruins and the forest

Gede, also spelled Gedi, is the ruin of a Swahili town abandoned centuries ago, set inside forest with walls, houses and a mosque still visible. Guides explain what archaeologists know and what remains unknown. The surrounding Arabuko Sokoke forest is a habitat for rare birds and small mammals, and quiet walks may bring monkeys and butterflies.

Marine parks and beaches

Malindi and Watamu marine parks protect coral reefs with tropical fish and, in some seasons, turtles. Snorkelling or a glass-bottom boat trip is the usual way to see them, and Watamu’s beaches and Mida Creek mangroves are good for a relaxing stop. Conditions vary with tides, wind and season, and boat operators may adjust plans for safety.

Optional Marafa excursion

Marafa Depression, known as Hell’s Kitchen, is a sandstone gorge inland from Malindi and can be added as an extra half day, subject to time and road conditions.

How the two days work

Day one is the drive north, with a visit to Gede Ruins, lunch in Malindi and an afternoon at the marine park or old town. After a night in your hotel, day two covers a morning excursion and a scenic return to Mombasa or your coast hotel. The drive north takes two to three hours depending on traffic.
