Kakamega Forest and Lake Victoria tour

Kakamega Forest, in western Kenya, is often described as the country’s last remaining tropical rainforest and the easternmost surviving fragment of the rainforest belt that once stretched across Central Africa. Combined with a stop on the shore of Lake Victoria near Kisumu, this tour introduces a very different side of Kenya from the savannah parks: dense, humid forest, strong birdlife and Africa’s largest lake.

Kakamega Forest

Local guides lead walks along forest trails looking for a wide range of recorded bird species, including several found nowhere else in Kenya, alongside primates such as the black-and-white colobus, blue monkey and De Brazza’s monkey. Butterflies, orchids and tall forest trees add to a walk that feels closer to Central African rainforest than typical Kenyan bush.

Lake Victoria and Kisumu

The tour can include time in Kisumu, Kenya’s third-largest city, on the shore of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake by surface area. A lakeside walk, local market visit or an optional boat trip to spot birdlife and fishing communities can round out the itinerary, depending on time available.

How the trip works

Most visitors combine the forest and lake into a two-day trip from Nairobi, with a long first day of travel followed by a morning forest walk and afternoon at the lake, or the option to start from Kisumu itself for a shorter version. Because the journey from Nairobi is long, we can also arrange a domestic flight to Kisumu to shorten travel time, at an extra cost.

Best time to visit

Kakamega can be visited year-round, though the drier months from June to September and December to February make forest trails easier underfoot. Birdlife is active throughout the year.

Good to know

Bring insect repellent, closed shoes and a light rain jacket, since forest weather can change quickly. The price is a guide per adult sharing a room, and the final quote depends on your starting point, transport choice and season.
