Meru National Park safari: rivers, woodland and Born Free country

Meru National Park lies east of Mount Kenya, where rainfall and thirteen rivers create a landscape of riverine forest, swamp and dense woodland quite different from Kenya’s open southern plains. It is also the setting for one of Kenya’s best-known wildlife stories: George and Joy Adamson raised the lioness Elsa here before her release into the wild, an account told in the book and film "Born Free." Meru remains one of the country’s quieter, less-visited parks, which appeals to travellers who have already seen the Mara or Amboseli and want somewhere with fewer vehicles.

Wildlife and rhino sanctuary

Elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, reticulated giraffe and a good range of antelope live in Meru’s mix of habitats. A fenced sanctuary inside the park protects both black and white rhino, and sightings there are more consistent than in the open park, though never guaranteed. The Tana River, Kenya’s longest, forms part of the park’s southern boundary and adds a scenic, watery backdrop uncommon elsewhere in Kenya.

Getting there

Meru is roughly a five- to six-hour drive from Nairobi, usually via Nyeri or Nanyuki, or reachable by scheduled light aircraft for those short on time. Because of the distance, most visitors spend at least one night, and the drive itself passes through changing highland and lowland scenery.

A typical two-day plan

Day one covers the drive from Nairobi with a lunch stop, arrival at your lodge and an afternoon game drive. Day two includes a sunrise drive, often taking in the rhino sanctuary, before the return journey. The trip can be extended to three days for a more relaxed pace or combined with Samburu for a longer northern Kenya circuit.

Best time to visit

The dry months of June to October and January to March are easiest for wildlife viewing; the rivers and swamps stay green even in dry periods, which keeps Meru attractive to animals year-round.
