Lake Naivasha · Adventure Tour
Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park sit about 90 kilometres from Nairobi in the Great Rift Valley, which makes them one of the easiest and most varied day trips from the capital. The lake is fresh water, edged with papyrus and acacia and home to hippos and hundreds of bird species. A few kilometres away, Hell’s Gate offers something unusual for a Kenyan park: you can walk or cycle among wildlife instead of staying inside a vehicle.
The day usually begins on the lake with a boat ride to see hippos, fish eagles, pelicans and kingfishers. Where conditions allow, the boat lands at Crescent Island, a private sanctuary where visitors walk with a guide among giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and antelope. Because the island has no large predators, walking is permitted, and it is a favourite with photographers and families.
Hell’s Gate is known for its red cliffs, volcanic rock towers such as Fischer’s Tower, and a narrow gorge that can be explored on foot with a local guide. Zebra, buffalo, baboon, eland and other herbivores graze on the open floor of the park. Cycling is popular for fit visitors, and walking routes suit most fitness levels. Geothermal steam vents in the area are part of Kenya’s geothermal energy programme.
You leave Nairobi in the early morning, drive down the escarpment with views over the valley, and reach the lake for a mid-morning boat ride. After lunch, you continue to Hell’s Gate for cycling or walking and a gorge visit, before the return drive to Nairobi in the late afternoon. The exact order can change with traffic and weather.
Morning starts are cooler and best for activity. Avoid the gorge after heavy rain because of flash-flood risk, and follow ranger instructions.
The price is a guide per adult and covers transport, guide, boat ride, Crescent Island and park fees. Lunch, bicycle hire and gorge guide tips are extra. Wear closed shoes, bring sunscreen and carry water. We confirm the final amount and inclusions before payment.
