Overview

Tanzania safari: Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongoro

Northern Tanzania is one of the world’s great safari regions, and it sits within reach of Kenya’s Amboseli and Nairobi. Our Tanzania Safari Extension is a five-day northern-circuit itinerary that works as a stand-alone trip or as an extension after a Kenya safari, with the Serengeti available as an add-on for a longer route.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is known for its large elephant herds and its huge baobab trees. In the dry season, from about June to October, animals gather along the Tarangire River, and lions, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and many bird species can be seen. The landscape is quieter and less visited than the Serengeti.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara lies at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment and combines groundwater forest, open floodplain and an alkaline lake. Baboons, blue monkeys, elephants, hippos and a rich birdlife live here. Tree-climbing lions are sometimes reported, but sightings are occasional and not guaranteed.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is a huge volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a floor covered in grassland, swamp and lake. Wildlife density is high, and visitors have a good chance of seeing lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo and possibly black rhino, though nothing is guaranteed. Descents are on steep tracks by 4x4 with time limits set by the conservation authority.

Serengeti option

The Serengeti is famous for the wildebeest migration, and its location changes with the season. Adding it means more driving time and higher park and lodge costs, so we quote it separately.

Coming from Kenya

You can cross overland at Namanga from Amboseli or fly from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro or Arusha. A Tanzania visa is required for most visitors, and the East Africa Tourist Visa does not cover Tanzania. Check the latest rules before travelling.

Best time to visit

The dry months of June to October and January to February are best for wildlife. The long rains from March to May are wet but quiet and green.

Can this follow a Kenya safari?

Yes. Amboseli and Nairobi connect well to Arusha by road or air.
