Lake Nakuru safari: rhinos, birds and Rift Valley views

Lake Nakuru National Park is a compact, rewarding safari destination in Kenya’s Rift Valley, roughly three to four hours by road from Nairobi. The park surrounds an alkaline lake, with woodland, grassland and rocky escarpments creating varied habitats in a small area. That makes it a good choice for a short safari, for families, and for anyone who cares about birdlife and photography.

Wildlife and birdlife

Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya’s best places to look for both black and white rhino, as the park operates as a fenced sanctuary. Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck, zebra, lion and leopard are also present. The lake has long been known for flamingos, but their numbers depend on water levels and food supply and can change dramatically from year to year, so we never promise a specific count. More than 400 bird species have been recorded, including pelicans, storks and fish eagles.

Viewpoints and short walks

Baboon Cliff and Out of Africa lookout give wide views across the lake and the plains. Makalia Falls in the south of the park can be visited on a short stop when time allows. The circuit around the lake is compact, so game drives are easy to shape around light and weather.

How the trip is planned

Day one is the drive from Nairobi, with the descent into the Rift Valley and a game drive in the afternoon. After a night at a lodge or hotel, day two begins with another game drive before the return to Nairobi. If you would like more time, the itinerary can be extended to include Lake Naivasha or Hell’s Gate.

Best time to visit

Wildlife is visible year-round. The dry months of June to October and January to February are easiest for animal viewing, while the green season offers dramatic skies and fewer visitors.
