Fort Jesus

Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 to protect their trading interests on the coast and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and museum. The fort’s thick coral-stone walls, bastions, courtyards and exhibits help explain the port’s turbulent history, and the ramparts give views over the harbour. Your guide will bring the story to life, though entry fees are paid at the gate.

Old Town walk

From the fort you can stroll through the narrow lanes of Old Town, past carved wooden doors, balconies, mosques and small shops. Architecture here reflects trade links with Arabia, India and Europe. Guides usually point out traditional Swahili houses, spice and coffee sellers, and local handicrafts, and you can stop for tea, snacks or lunch if you wish.

Landmarks and the Old Port

Typical stops include the Mombasa Tusks on Moi Avenue, built to mark a royal visit in the 1950s, the Old Port where traditional dhows still dock, and, time permitting, Hindu temples and markets. Haller Park and other attractions further out can be added as a longer or separate excursion.

The tour lasts about four to five hours and usually starts in the morning or afternoon by arrangement. Pace is relaxed, with walking over uneven streets, so comfortable shoes are essential. Dress modestly for mosque and temple areas, and bring sun protection and water.
