For cruise passengers travelling with young children, or anyone who wants an easy, low-effort few hours ashore, Haller Park at Bamburi is a comfortable choice close to the port. The park sits on land that used to be a limestone quarry, later rehabilitated into shaded walking trails and wildlife enclosures, and it pairs well with time on the beach afterwards.
Flat, shaded paths lead past ponds and enclosures holding giant tortoises, eland, buffalo, hippo and a resident population of Nile crocodiles. A giraffe feeding platform is a highlight for children, and the whole visit is paced gently, with benches and shade along the way. A local guide explains the park’s history as a rehabilitation project and points out the animals along the route.
Once the park visit is finished, there is usually time for a walk along Bamburi beach or a short rest at a beachfront spot before returning to the port, giving the excursion a relaxed, unhurried feel rather than a tightly packed sightseeing schedule.
Because the park is close to Mombasa Port and the pace is gentle, this excursion works well for families, older travellers, or anyone on a shorter call who still wants a proper stop ashore rather than just a city walk.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat; most of the walk is shaded but some areas are open to the sun. The price is a guide per person and includes the park entry fee and guide; giraffe feed is a small separate charge inside the park.
